Long works are novels, non-fiction books, and so on..

Shorter works are novellas and will also include collections of poetry (normal sized one, bigger anthologies would go above) and plays and graphic novels (as a subset).

Short works will be short stories, essays, individual comics (subset) and the like. In those cases where I read an entire collection of short stories, I will list that collection as a whole (and count it by a factor of one).

Here goes the fourth year that I will keep up with this tally. My first year netted 105 weighted "books". The second year saw me reading 116 "books" or so (those confused by the irony quotes, that is just my way of saying that I used the weighted scale outlined above). However, the third year saw me stall out about 95. The reasons were simple: grad school, new job, and exploring other hobbies. In 2007 and 2008 (the first two years), I was unemployed for over half of each of those years and I was in something of an anti-tv, anti-movie phase. This past year (2009), I had more to do and was also interested in more hobbies.

My goal, right now, is to make this my best year yet, even if that only translates to 117 books. I think I can do it.
